Between freedom and peace

Artist: Ana Huerta

Description: I took this photograph in Ciudadela Chalaca, an area considered dangerous, which belongs to the Callao district in Lima, Perú.

In Peru, the percentage of older adults working informally is alarming. 4 out of 10 are forced to take to the streets because their subsistence depends on daily income. They have no job benefits, let alone life insurance to cover them. Over time this reality has become normalized. Something that further aggravates the situation, in the framework of COVID-19, is the possibility of contagion and what it means to be within the population at risk. In this photograph we can see Rita Quispe (76 years old), who has a paralyzed half of her body, diabetes, hypothyroidism and hearing problems. Her husband and the love of her live, Rolando Chávez (77 years old), an informal bread seller, has to take care of her.
